Some people say that horror is about the unknown.
There’s a certain kind of comfort that comes with believing the things we need to fear are far away from us. It lets us think that they’re not real. Don’t want demons? Don’t read from old tomes. Stay ghost-free by avoiding Ouija boards. Keep out of the woods, and you won’t see a monster.
But what do you do when the source of terror comes from the mundane?
In Coffee Love, Ron Ripley shows how good intentions can strip a once comfortable place of its safety. Anna Sinjin explores the dangers of simply changing a set routine in Respect Your Elders. And lastly, Blind Date (written by someone brilliant who, in no way has a caffeine addiction that feeds her paranoia) is the story of two people realizing that an average event can always get much worse.
If horror truly is about the unknown, then we should be careful to remember: we don’t know as much as we think we do.
